CfP Ethnologia Fennica 1/2025: Methods in Contemporary Ethnology

Writing about and opening up methodological choices can be challenging in empirical research. Ethnologists who study the everyday life may turn to other disciplines to find concepts and methodological tools to grasp the issues that are difficult to see, perceive and verbalize. On the other hand, ethnologists have the capability to utilize and develop creative methodological tools.

This issue of Ethnologia Fennica focuses on tools and methods in ethnology and related disciplines. What constitutes ethnological research in the 2020s and which methods have been applied to create ethnological knowledge? Which methods are useful, how are they applied, and what kinds of new perspectives do they bring to contemporary discussions on research practices?

We call for research and review articles which address methodological choices and practices as well as connections between methods, concepts, and theoretical thinking. We are interested, for example, in how and why researchers apply close or distant reading, different ethnographical variations such as creative and participatory approaches, or digital tools and AI. We encourage discussions on reasons behind methodological and practical choices as well as case studies which have been challenging or rewarding from the perspective of methodology. We also welcome texts about applications of new digital possibilities in ethnological and ethnographic research.

Please submit your abstracts by 31 May 2024, and the article manuscript by 31 of October 2024. The deadline for reviews, reports, and commentary texts is 28 February 2025. The issue will be published in June 2025.

Call for Papers to Puls Vol. 10

Puls – journal for ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology is an online open access journal published by Svenskt visarkiv/Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research, Stockholm, Sweden. The main focus of Pulsis ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology, but the journal also embraces adjacent disciplines, such as other aspects of musicology and choreology, folklore, literature, and related studies of traditional and popular culture. Pulswelcomes analyses of historical and contemporary sources as well as empirical case studies and theoretical discussions. From vol. 9 Puls will be published at Publicera, a portal for Swedish online journals hosted by the National Library of Sweden: Puls – journal for ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology (kb.se)

Each issue of Puls either focuses on a specific theme or opens up for any topic within the journal’s field. The theme of Puls vol. 10 is “music life”. Music life – two small words that make up an efficient compound for the sum of all the complex contexts that make music happen, the totality of resources, prerequisites and conditions that make musicking possible – the tangible, such as arenas, institutions, networks and instruments, and the intangible, such as ideas, values, beliefs and habits. We also welcome articles with topics and approaches outside of this theme, but within the journal’s field.

Authors are invited to submit articles for issue vol. 10 before 16 August 2024 on https://publicera.kb.se/puls/about/submissions

The editorial work is conducted by a general editor and a co-editor (the latter appointed for a two-year period) in co-operation with the editorial board of Puls. An external Advisory Board constituted of cross-disciplinary experts is liaised with the journal. All articles are subject to a double-blind peer review process prior to publication.

Articles in Puls have a range of 10–20 pages, which corresponds to a maximum of circa 8 000 words. The accepted languages are Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and English. The editorial board welcomes illustrations, sound and video clips suitable for the journals on-line format. Inbjudan till författare till Puls nr 10

Puls är en tidskrift för aktuella perspektiv inom musik- och dansetnologi i fältens bredaste bemärkelse. Genom bidrag från dessa och angränsande kulturvetenskapliga discipliner vill tidskriften belysa musikens och dansens uttryck, roller och funktioner i samhället, igår och i dag. Puls välkomnar till exempel studier av historiska och samtida källmaterial liksom empiriska fallstudier och teoretiska inlägg och diskussioner.

Temat för Puls nr 10 är ”musikliv”. Musik och liv – två små ord som effektivt sammanfattar de komplexa förutsättningar som får musik att hända: resurser och villkor. Det gäller det materiella såsom arenor, institutioner, nätverk och instrument, liksom det immateriella, som idéer, värderingar, föreställningar och vanor. Vi välkomnar även artiklar med ämnen utanför detta tema, men inom tidskriftens områden.

Puls är en öppen e-tidskrift som från och med nu publiceras på Kungliga bibliotekets plattform för vetenskapliga tidskrifter Publicera. Tidskriften utkommer normalt med ett nummer per år, vilket kan kretsa kring ett särskilt tema eller vara helt öppet. Det redaktionella arbetet leds av en fast huvudredaktör samt en gästredaktör som knyts till tidskriften i tvåårsperioder i samarbete med Svenskt visarkivsredaktionsgrupp. Ett vetenskapligt råd bestående av externa sakkunniga inom olika ämnesområden från hela Norden är knutet till tidskriften. Samtliga artiklar är sakkunniggranskade enligt vetenskaplig praxis av två anonyma och oberoende granskare.

Artiklar i Puls har ett omfång på 10–20 sidor – högst ca 8 000 ord. Artiklarna kan vara på svenska, danska, norska eller engelska. Redaktionen välkomnar illustrationer, ljud- och filmklipp med mera som lämpar sig för onlineformatet, där författaren har säkerställt alla rättigheter. Kom med och skapa en vetenskaplig publikation som överskrider sedvanliga klassificeringar: vi söker skribenter till Finska Fornminnesföreningens årsskrift Suomen Museo-Finskt Museum 2024!

SM-FM som grundades år 1894 publicerar vetenskapliga artiklar med kollegial granskning samt översikter, bok- och utställningsrecensioner, reseberättelser, intervjuer och aktuella bidrag inom arkeologi, etnologi, konsthistoria och museologi – på alla inhemska språk.

Temat för år 2024, Inflytelserika museum, inbjuder författare att utforska och granska museernas inflytande som en samhällelig och forskningsmässig förändringskraft samt som en både kollektiv och individuell resurs.

Museer har alltid påverkat såväl människor som samhället, både medvetet och omedvetet. Museer och vetenskapscentra har förknippats med idealet om neutralitet, även om deras verksamhet bygger på uppfattningar och mångskiktade val om vilket slags arv som är värt att vårda.

Under de senaste åren har museipolitiska program och kulturarvsstrategier styrt museer till att öka sin samhälleliga påverkan. Å andra sidan har vetenskapscentra och vetenskapliga museer åtagit sig uppgiften att bygga upp det nationella vetenskapliga kapitalet och att presentera vetenskapens arv för att stärka demokratin. Vad innebär detta i praktiken? Vad borde museer och vetenskapscentra påverka? Vilka medel har dessa institutioner till sitt förfogande? Var går gränsen mellan påverkan och manipulation?

ERBJUD OSS ett artikelförslag som förmedlar ny kunskap eller välgrundad spekulation om påverkans och inflytandes koppling till museernas och vetenskapscentras mångfacetterade uppdrag och uppgifter eller till en utställning som institution och presentationsverktyg.

Din forskningsartikel kan besvara teoretiska, doktrinära eller empiriska frågor eller bilda en syntes som diskuterar tidigare forskning som en analytisk översikt av forskningslitteratur och begrepp. Förutom forskningsartiklar kan du också erbjuda en översikt eller en argumenterande essä.

Skicka din artikelidé och en sammanfattning i word-format (cirka 200 ord) till huvudredaktör Johanna Enqvist (johanna.enqvist@heureka.fi) senast den 17 mars 2024. Beskriv i följebrevet vilken av ovan nämnda kategorier du erbjuder din text till presentera i sammanfattningen 1) en preliminär titel; 2) minst en forskningsfråga; 3) tre huvudsakliga forskningsbegrepp eller nyckelord och 4) en kort beskrivning av analysmetoder, granskningsperspektiv eller teoretiskareferensram. Inkludera också 5) en kort förteckning (2–4 titlar) över den viktigaste källitteraturen och 6) en kortfattad skribentpresentation med kontaktuppgifter.

Därutöver publicerar vi lectio praecursoria, bok- eller utställningsrecensioner, aktuella inlägg, nekrologer och reseberättelser, även utanför temat.

Call for papers by Ethnologia Fennica:

Sensory ethnography described by Sarah Pink (2009) pays particular attention to the multisensoriality of experience, perception, knowing and practices. In addition to the present moment emphasized in the ethnographic research, senses as part of the urban life can be studied in different temporalities, in past, present and future. This can be done by using, for example, archives, documents for future urban planning, or participatory design processes as research materials.

In this call, we invite researchers who study the urban pasts, presents and futures, to consider with us what kinds of ontological, methodological, theoretical or empirical questions and consequences the sensorial turn brings into the study of urbanity.

People live in complex relationships and entanglements with their urban environment. They move through the city and spend they work and free time in urban settings. They live with other humans, but also with non-humans, and the materiality of their environment affects their lives in multiple ways. To study this complexity with sensory point of departure, like ethnography, means looking at the city by emphasizing people’s sensory experiences and narrations of it. However, we do not want to limit the research only to the present, but we are also curious of the past (and future) sense of the urban. It is, for example, interesting how different generations experience the urban in different times.

Urban environments, and consequently, lives lived in them, are often planned and designed according to the prevailing discourses, ideologies and ideas, while they are simultaneously formed in different layers of time. These in turn direct and contextualize the sensory experiences, knowing of the city and practices related to and in the city.

The method of sensory ethnography is currently well established. Ethnographers have paid attention to different senses, such as eyesight, sound, smell and touch as well as noticed that the experiences are often multisensorial. It has been suggested that there are even more ways of sensing the world than we acknowledge at the present.

For this special issue we invite articles that discuss different ways of doing sensory research in urban settings containing sensorial perception, knowing and practices related to city and urban environment in present and through time.

The special issue is edited within the research project “Designed, experienced and sensed socio-material wellbeing in Linnakaupunki, Turku” (Hyvinvoinnin suunniteltu, koettu ja aistittu sosio-materiaalisuus Turun Linnakaupungissa). The project combines perspectives of Ethnology, Cultural History, Museology and Futures Research, and is conducted at the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University and University of Oulu.

Ethnologia Fennica is a peer-reviewed, international open access journal. The journal publishes original scholarly articles, review articles, conference reports and book reviews written in English. The articles undergo double-blind peer review. The Finnish Publication Forum classifies Ethnologia Fennica as a leading academic journal at Level 2 (on a scale of 0 to 3).

Please submit your abstract by 8 December 2023, and the article manuscript by 22 of March 2024. The deadline for reviews, reports and commentary texts is 31 August 2024. The issue will be published in December 2024.

Tema: Kreativt etnografiskt skrivande

Etnologi har beskrivits som en ”litterär vetenskap” (Ehn 1996; Beckman 2011) då etnologiska texter bär ofta drag av skönlitteratur i form av rika miljöbeskrivningar och ett metaforiskt språk. Den etnografiska skrivakten och ett gott författarskap har länge varit prioriterad som en viktig del av forskningsprocessen, och det finns flera exempel på etnologiska studier som nått en bred läsekrets även utanför akademiska sammanhang. Under senare år har intresset för etnografiskt skrivande uppmärksammats (se t.ex. KP 2017 nr. 2 Silow Kallenberg & Ingridsdotter red.; Lykke m.fl. 2014; Richardson & St. Pierre 2005).
Till detta tema av Kulturella Perspektiv efterlyser vi bidrag som på olika sätt tillämpar ett kreativt etnografiskt skrivande och/eller resonerar metodologiskt om betydelsen av sådant skrivande inom etnologi och närliggande discipliner. Vi ser gärna bidrag som adresserar teman som autoetnografi, sensory ethnography, poetic inquiry, självreflexivt skrivande, skrivande som metod eller andra teman som bidrar till att höja kunskapen samt bidra till en kritisk vetenskaplig diskussion om kreativt etnografiskt skrivande.

Kulturella Perspektiv – Svensk etnologisk tidskrift

Theme: Creative Ethnographic Writing

Ethnology has been described as a ”literary science” (Ehn 1996; Beckman 2011) as ethnological texts often bear features of fiction in the form of rich descriptions of the environment and a metaphorical language. The ethnographic act of writing and good authorship has long been prioritized as an important part of the research process, and there are several examples of ethnological studies that have reached a wide readership even outside academic contexts. In recent years, attention has been drawn to the interest in ethnographic writing (see, for example, KP 2017 no. 2, Silow Kallenberg & Ingridsdotter, eds.; Lykke et al. 2014; Richardson & St. Pierre 2005).
For this theme of Kulturella Perspektiv, we are looking for contributions that in various ways apply creative ethnographic writing and/or reason methodologically about the importance of such writing in ethnology and related disciplines. We welcome contributions that address themes such as autoethnography, sensory ethnography, poetic inquiry, self-reflexive writing, writing as a method or other themes that contribute to raising knowledge and contributing to a critical scholarly discussion about creative ethnographic writing.
Upload article proposals (6000-8000 words) no later than April 1, 2024 on the journal’s platform (https://publicera.kb.se/kp). We accept entries written in Swedish, English, Danish and Norwegian. The articles will undergo double blind peer review by two reviewers. The accepted thematic articles will then be published continuously in 2024.
