Fulbright Hildeman Scholar at University of Wisconsin, Madison, spring semester 2028

The Fulbright Commission will award the 2027-2028 Hildeman Fellowship to teach at the University of Wisconsin – Madison during the spring semester of 2028.

The Nordic Unit within the Department of German, Nordic and Slavic is seeking a dynamic Swedish scholar in Nordic studies with an expertise in history. We are especially interested in any of the following areas: gender and queer studies; the welfare state; migration studies; postcolonial and indigenous studies; historical sociolinguistics; history of science, medicine, and technology; media studies; art history; literary studies; or design studies—within both Nordic and diasporic contexts.

The Hildeman Fellow will be expected to:
• Teach one graduate level seminar in English, as well as an additional discussion section in Swedish. The course will be geared both toward graduate students in the Nordic unit and graduate students with a professional interest in the topic.
• Give at least one public lecture on a topic related to the scholar’s area of expertise.
• Present at the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies (SASS) conference, hosted by the University of Wisconsin–Madison in May 2028.
• Conduct research in collaboration with UW–Madison faculty, scholars, or affiliated research centers and communities whose work intersects with the scholar’s area of expertise.
• Informally advise a small number of students with interest in the Fellow’s area of expertise.
• Be in residence for the entire spring term (January-May 2028).

Once the Fellow is selected, they will work closely with department faculty to design the course. The successful candidate will have opportunities to engage across the university campus with potential interdisciplinary and interdepartmental opportunities.

Established in 1875, the Department of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is the oldest Scandinavian Studies department in the United States. Since its founding, the department has offered a variety of courses on literature, language/linguistics, culture, philology, and folklore, within the field of Scandinavian and Nordic. The Nordic unit celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2025, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to Scandinavian cultural and academic exploration with the aim to continue fostering an understanding and appreciation of Nordic heritage, and keeping it a vibrant and integral part of the academic landscape.
