OBJECT EXCHANGE – COLLABORATIVE THINKING THROUGH ETHNOGRAPHIC MATERIALS
This ‘labinar’ invites researchers from all divisions and at all levels to explore object and material exchange as a mode of collaborative ethnographic thinking. Participants are encouraged to bring an object from their fieldwork or empirical collection that currently haunts or challenges them, or otherwise resists easy interpretation. This could be a fieldnote, interview excerpt, material artefact, image, document or any other fragment. By exchanging these objects and momentarily working with another’s material, we aim to unsettle wonted perspectives and experiment with new analytic possibilities.
During the session, in small groups of two to three, we will engage with exchanged objects through holding, reading, viewing, or otherwise encountering them. Responses may be oral, written, or expressed in other modes. We will reflect on what happens when we work with unfamiliar materials, how we make sense of them, how much context we need, and what sharing entails in ethnographic practice. The aim is to explore how ethnographic objects travel, transform, and generate thought, as well as how collaborative handling, interpretation, and discussion can deepen our methodological and analytical perspectives.
