Is autism a thing or a person? The problematization of linguistic identity in autism

Grace Joplin Ferreira, University of Helsinki

The debate about linguistic identity in autism research is fierce and never ending, far from having a consensus. Many people who have been diagnosed with autism prefer identity first language, i.e., autistic, while many others would rather prefer person with autism. Thus, this presentation attempts to explore this debate having in mind the function of language and epistemology. Nevertheless, it is important to notice that this polarization can be never understood, but rather respected, according to neurodiversity affirming practices (Milton, 2012).
