Established in 1922, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in Africa. The School of Law is the oldest law degree awarding institution in Uganda. It evolved from the Department of Law which was first established in 1968 in the Faculty of Social Sciences.\u00a0 The Vision of the School of Law is \u201cTo become one of Africa\u2019s pre-eminent law school with a rich tradition of excellence in the teaching of law, legal training and research\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019s mission is \u201cTo impart quality legal knowledge and skills within an inter-disciplinary framework inspired by legal scholarship, outreach and a commitment to justice for all\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The School of Law runs three degree programmes i.e., Bachelor of Laws, Master of Laws and Doctor of Laws. The School of Law has five departments i.e., the Department of Law and Jurisprudence, Public and Comparative Law Department, Environmental Law Centre, Commercial Law Department, and the Human Rights and Peace Centre (HURIPEC). In addition to the Departments, the School has a number of initiatives that are in transition to become fully fledged departments. The major ones include the Public Interest Law Clinic (PILAC), the Refuge Law Project and the Gender and Sexuality Project.<\/p>\n<p>The flagship human rights publication of the School of Law is the East African Journal of Peace and Human Rights.
