Her main research focus has been in physics concept learning and conceptual change and developing instruction methods called didactical reconstructions for physics teacher education with aim for better organization and understanding of physics subject matter and concept formation. Characteristic for her research is interdisciplinary approach: applying history and philosophy of physics to didactical approaches and vocology for exploring learning and teaching processes. Mäntylä’s research has been funded by Academy of Finland and currently AoF funds her research project “Dynamics of explaining and understanding – Conceptual development in teacher education”
